Get Involved

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is as basic as speaking on behalf of oneself or others to get something done or accomplished.

You are an advocate if you have ever:

  • Given your opinion in a town meeting;
  • Returned a faulty product to a store;
  • Stood up for someone who was being unfairly treated in a public place;
  • Written a letter to a business about poor or outstanding services received;
  • Gone to City Hall to complain about a property tax bill that seems too high;
  • Met with your legislator to discuss concerns in your community.

Why should I get involved?

  1. Talking to your representatives is in your best interest. By telling your legislators what matters to you, you are helping to create a state and a nation that reflects your values and concerns.
  2. Your representatives need you. Your representative’s jobs are to represent you, your job is to tell your representatives what you think. Representatives are not experts on everything, and they really do need your personal story to help them make the best decision possible.
  3. It only takes a few phone calls or letters to get a legislators attention. You and a few friends can have a huge impact on what happens to Virginia’s children.
